A poem and translation for Advent: “The Raven”, by Wilhelm Hey (1789 – 1854)
Ein Gedicht und Übersetzung zum Advent: Der Rabe, by Wilhelm Hey (1789 – 1854)
“The Raven”
I see a traveling vagabond.
He has a coal-black jacket on
And runs around in wintry air
To doors of houses here and there,
Calls out, “Rab! Rab!” in sorrowed tones,
“Oh, won’t you please toss me a bone?”
So then arrived the lovely spring,
The vagabond spread out his wings;
Warm air moved in and cold air out,
And soaring far above the house
In fresh and happy winds that flow
“Give Thanks! Give Thanks!” he called below.

Der Rabe
Was ist das für ein Bettelmann?
Er hat ein kohlschwarz Röcklein an
Und läuft in dieser Winterzeit
Vor alle Thüren weit und breit,
Ruft mit betrübtem Ton: „Rab! Rab!
Gebt mir doch auch einen Knochen ab.“
Da kam der liebe Frühling an,
Gar wohl gefiel’s dem Bettelmann;
Er breitete seine Flügel aus
Und flog dahin weit übers Haus;
Hoch aus der Luft so frisch und munter:
„Hab Dank! hab Dank!“ rief er herunter.
