“Christmas”

I feel a longing for a land
of quiet and security.
I sense that it was once at hand,
when I, without obscurity,
could see the stars before my eyes
that fill the endless universe.
And then it took me by surprise:
I felt, with ease and unrehearsed
that everything, if hill or field,
if distant country or its race,
the noontime sun or moon concealed,
that rain and stream and every lake,
that I can find all that within,
in lovely miniature, unique.
No need to probe earth’s every inch,
I hear the resonance and speech
of everything in this creation
when I am calm and feel its worth
before the Lord in veneration
who made and will perfect the earth.
Believing that it is the time
that each of us perceives this sign:
in love we creatures place our hopes.
I think, that Christmastime is close!

Weihnachten

der all dies schuf und halten will.
Ich glaube, daß war der Moment,

den sicher jeder von euch kennt,

in dem der Mensch zur Lieb’ bereit:

Ich glaub, da ist Weihnachten nicht weit!
